Top Three Reasons Home Based Business Opportunities Fail

With more than half of home business opportunities failing within their first three years, you may be wondering why you started a home based business at all. For many people working from home is cost effective and allows them to spend time with their family. If you want to start a home business make sure you fully understand why so many businesses fail so you can avoid these pitfalls.

If you’re an entrepreneur you need to be ready for any challenges that may come your way. A good idea is not enough. You need to consider marketing, growth, and a whole host of other issues that any business will come across. By starting off smart and knowing what you’re up against, you are much more likely to succeed in the world of home business opportunities.

Problem #1: No Plan of Action

A large part of what I like to refer to as the ‘business success puzzle’, is a comprehensive business plan. Complete with a detailed outline of a businesses structure: management team; products and services; marketing strategies; and financial targets. Small business owners and entrepreneurs that work at home, neglect to see the importance of such a plan. Since the majority of their capital comes from a personal account, they are convinced that a business plan isn’t worthwhile.

This is also a myth. Every business needs an action plan. At some point, you will want to review your business strategies: to find new ways to increase sales; and generate a client database. Without a business plan, you’re heading down a road that leads to disaster.

Problem #2: Get Rich Quick Schemes

It’s good to get excited about your home business opportunities and ideas. However you will need to be realistic as well. Don’t be immediately taken by investment offers that promise large amounts of money in a short amount of time. Be smart about your investment plans.

While a get rich quick scheme may sound like a great answer, this is usually far from the truth. Most of these schemes will leave you penny less, with your money in someone else’s pocket.

Several ‘wanna-be’ entrepreneurs have invested their life’s savings into Internet programs that promise riches, thinking that they will receive the preparation and assistance they need to join the thousands already making money on the internet. They begin handing out their money like Halloween candy. Although some people have made these programs successful, there is an enormous risk to gambling with ‘get rich schemes’.

Problem #3: Changing Your Focus

Many people who start their own home business try to do too many things at the same time. Some products or services have nothing to do with one another, and should not be sold or marketed together. Focus on your target market and choose products and services that best meet their specific needs.

Let’s say you assist others at writing resumes. After a business event, you’ve discovered that there is a lot of potential in Network Groups. Thinking that you could interest your existing clientele, you attempt to add this service. Is it a good idea to combine them? Is your market interested in what you are selling?

Before you start to sell something new make sure you have already been developing and learning about the product or service in detail. Always consider your target market before embarking on any marketing plans.

Take time to review any new entrepreneurial ventures and compare them with your existing business plan. See if they will fit in with your goals. Pursuing home business opportunities can take some time and lots of effort, but carefully done success will be yours.
